Its already been 6 weeks since school has started. Time really passed by so fast. As an UIR student, I have gone through different learning stages and processes. UIR stands for Using Internet as Resource Tools. I have definitely learn how to search better with the different type of search methods. I have took notice of different websites introduced by this website like TalkingCork.com, Metacrawler, the subject directories and so on. It was also a pleasure working with my team mates; Gwen, May, Jun Jiang and Rui Rong. My topic is a very interesting topic and I am lucky to have chosen it. I got an opportunity to create my own blog and update it with reflections and some blog activities like if I won $500 and my dream holiday. I used to blog but I stopped as I was not frequent in updating. I also learned to make my blog more interesting my putting games, a music player and a chat box where my friends can tag me and give their comments.
I really enjoy this subject as it is so different from other subjects. It is not too serious and it allows me to give my own opinions about things. I have learnt a lot from my research about my topic. Mdm Faridah has been very supporting and approachable. So overall, two thumbs up for UIR! :)

Day 7 and 8( Week 5)
E-learning week
Ok, so this week is e-learning week. Wehoo!! No UIR classes but there is an activity to do. I have to post my research about my topic to Wiki. It was much easier because I have already an account during class last week. It took me a day to complete this task. My aim for this task is to update my group mates and also my classmates about my topic and how it plays a part in everyday life. I have focused my research to what are the different types of drugs being abused, how parents play a part, drug prevention and an intro on drug abuse.
I hope that my resource sharing helps people to be more aware about my topic.

Day 6 & 7
Back to class..
On Tuesday, 12 May 08
Proceed on practical 6a & b. The practical consists of 2 parts. Part 1 is the class test but it is on Friday instead. So we still have time to study. Move on to part 2. Part 2 is to do a research on my dream holiday. As soon as I saw that topic, i quickly thought of Venice. The thought of Venice itself just makes me go to lalaland. *Snap* back to reality. It was fun researching on Venice. How I wish it was real but it will be one day. But I also make changes on my practical 4 & 5. Today was the formative feedback on the portfolio. So far everything is ok but there is still room for improvement. 2 more weeks to portfolio submission. *Gulps*
Oh ya I also have to evaluate a website from one of my resources that I have found on practical 4&5. This is part of my portfolio.
On Friday, 16 May 08 (Practical 8)
Judgement day. Today was the test. Thank god I passed. I'm happy with my results. :D After the test, continued on creating my own wikispace account. This is for next week's e-learning. After creating our own accounts, we moved on to practical 8 which is talkingcork.com. Different people has different views. So as a S'porean, I have mix feelings. In a way it does voices out the people's opinions and views but it can cause problems. So its a 50-50 for me. But I must say that the jokes are funny especially the games. Hahaha.
So next week is an e-learning week. No classes for both sessions. Yeah!! But still have to do e-learning activities.

My dream holiday

VENICE
the city of love...♥♥
Using my search knowledge, it was easier for me as I already know where is my dream holiday therefore, my keywords are Venice. Simple.. haha. I browse through Yahoo!Travel Guide and tehre I could find hotel, tour packages and a lot more. There were also photos of the wonderful city. Venice is in Italy so it would be an extra thing for me to go to Italy and visit its other cities.
I must say that Yahoo!Travel Guid is really useful for tourists who want to make reservations as it has many links to other websites that includes exciting packages.
I could have chosen anywhere else but why Venice? Hmm.. Its because its so historic for me. The buildings, architecture, its hard to find especially in S'pore. Haha.. Venice is so special. A city on water that just brings a romantic feeling, like on the gondola. Hais.. *back to lalaland*
Venice = Unique.
Most importantly to me, its not the place but who I spend my holiday with..

Today I was absent for class because I was not feeling well. But everyone was required to do practical 4 and 5. This practical plays an important part of the portfolio that will soon need to be submitted. The practical is about the different search engines like search engines, meta search engine and subject directory. Evaluate and summarize the different strengths and weaknesses. After reading through the lecture, it also teaches the different methods and strategies to find the relevant results. Not entering the relevant keywords, can lead to a whole list of junk.
I got to analyze and find the advantages and disadvantages of the different search engines. I use;

I got to find more resources about my topic. Yeah!!
Overall for me, I prefer meta search engine. It gives the whole search result found in the search engines. Unlike search engines, the results are too narrow. For meta, it searches other search engines also. Not only that, it also open a new window for the resource/ website selected. This allows accessibility for the users who are doing a lot of research. The user need not go back and forth just to find what they need. It allows multi- tasking.

Day 4

Today there was no class because of e-learning. We had to complete practical 3 and Tutorial 1 and 2. Part of the tutorial is to post a reply on the discussion board about..
1) Briefly explain how Internet has enriched your academic life. Illustrate your answer using at least ONE Internet resource you had learnt in UIR.
2) Comment on the need for "Advocacy" websites.

and also comment on our friends post. Attendance will be marked based on participating in this discussion. Practical 3 is about listing out the 4 resources i had found so far and group it to the different kinds of websites. There is information, personal, advocacy .etc. Another activity is to try the e-learning exercise on OLE about if you are given S$500 and post it on my blog.
There was no class but there were activities to do. It was fun shopping online. If only it was for real.. hahahaha. So in conclusion, i am a big spender. LOL. Practical 3 was a good exercise for me to better understand what types of websites that are available. It also allows me to differentiate the websites. There were quite a lot to do but I had fun doing it. I am interested to see what my friends post in the discussion forum. I want to look for more articles regarding drug issues to further understand the steps taken to better manage this issue.

My class had our first practical for UIR. This time it was more on research and creating our very own blog. I had to find two websites, one organisational and the other personal. I must say that it was hard to differentiate. I had some trouble trying to find the websites but at last I manage to. I found an interesting website about drug abuse in which I would like to share. It is a pdf file that really gives an in depth explanation about drugs abuse among teens. It includes the reasons, solutions and even the different types of common drugs that teens take. After reading a lot websites, I realise that are a lot of reasons why youths turn to taking drugs and abusing it. Reasons like peer pressure, being different from others, pleasure, because of parents and many more. I am sure that different teens have different opinions and reasons about this topic. Hmm..but are they just pointing fingers?
The other website that I found is a top story done by a reporter, Kristin Shaw,who interviews youth in the United States about drugs and also alcohol. It is interesting what youths there think about this issue. Check it out.

It was the second day of class. I started with practical 1 and had to do research about my topic. I have to find websites that are e-journals/magazines, WWW or forums. It was really tough to find e-journal sites. I also posted my question in the forum at AsiaOne.com. I hope that people will reply and give me their opinions. I like the topic that I have chosen as I find it really ineteresting.

This was my first ever UIR class. I was very anxious to know what this subject is about, who my teacher is and also are there any of my classmates that are also in the same class as me. Hehehe. I was glad to know that this subject uses blogging as the assignment. I love blogging, especially changing blog skins. This subject also gives me an oppurtunity to learn the different uses of the internet. Ms Faridah gaves the class a brief explanations and expectations about UIR. We also had an ice breaking group after forming a group of 5 people. I am so so so happy that my classmates are there with me.. :)
